The University of Colorado volleyball team opened the 2011 with a split Friday at the Northern Colorado Classic in Greeley, defeating UNLV 3-1 and losing to Cal Davis 3-1.
Kerra Schroeder led the Buffs with 15 kills and 11 digs in the 25-15, 25-19, 20-25, 25-18 win over the Rebels, and freshman Kelsey English added nine kills in her first collegiate start.
Schroeder posted a match-high 20 kills in the 23-25, 25-17, 25-23, 25-22 loss to Davis, and Alyssa Valentine and Nikki Lindow also reached double figures with 10 each.
Kelley Arnold had 13 kills for UNC in its 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-18) season-opening win over UNLV.
• Opposite hitter Katelyn Steffan seemed at home in her new position, recording six kills in the opening set, and 10 overall, including the match’s final point, as No. 15 Colorado State opened with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-21) win over host Arkansas.

Three more Rapids were called up by their national teams Friday after Jeff Larentowicz’s invitation to the U.S. national team on Thursday.
Gambia called up forward Sanna Nyassi for its Sept. 4 match against host Namibia. Jamaica is enlisting Omar Cummings for a Sept. 2 friendly against host Ecuador. Goalkeeper Steward Ceus got the call from Haiti for two World Cup qualifying matches: U.S. Virgin Islands on Sept. 2 in Port-au-Prince and Curaçao on Sept. 6 in Willemstad, Curaçao.
