A man wanted in El Paso County for allegedly kidnapping his girlfriend and firing five shots into a good Samaritan’s car has been arrested in New Mexico.

Corey Handy, 28, was taken into custody Tuesday in Corrales, N.M., according to an El Paso County Sheriff’s Office media release.

On Aug. 10 Handy argued with his girlfriend, a 21-year-old Colorado Springs woman, near Barnes Road and Powers Boulevard, the sheriff’s office said. Handy then allegedly forced her into a car at gunpoint and threatened to kill her.

The woman jumped from the car and flagged down a 40-year-old Colorado Springs woman, who allowed the fleeing woman to get into her car.

Handy followed the women, drove up beside their car and and fired five shots into the vehicle, the sheriff’s office said.

Two children, ages 5 and 8, were also in the fleeing car. No one was hit by the gunfire.

Handy was at-large until Tuesday when New Mexico police arrested him. An officer in Corrales, who had seen a wanted photo of the suspect, spotted Handy pushing a motorcycle into a gas station and recognized him, the release said.

Handy tried to flee but was caught a short distance away. He was combative when he was arrested, the sheriff’s office said.

He is being held at the Sandoval County Jail in New Mexico and the El Paso County District Attorney’s Office is handling his extradition.

Handy faces charges of attempted murder, kidnapping and child abuse in El Paso County.
