A water main pipe broke in Aurora this morning, shutting down a portion of East 13th Avenue.

Workers are at the scene and the broken section of 12-inch pipe should be replaced and back on line this afternoon, said Greg Baker, a spokesman with Aurora Water.

The pipe failure happened at about 6:45 a.m., flooding an area near East 13th Avenue and Xanadu Street, Baker said.

Aurora Water had hooked up a temporary water supply for St. Pius X Catholic School to get it through the temporary shut down.

East 13th Avenue has been shut down between Potomac and Peoria Streets, traffic is being detoured.

Other customers nearby without water should be limited to about a one block area, Baker said.

Officials hope to have the water back by about 3 p.m., Baker said.
