A former college administrator was on the hunt for drug dealers who sold him $600 worth of dirt when he ordered a bodyguard to kill a man who failed to lead him to the thieves, prosecutors said Friday.

Michael Berkowitz, 63, was ordered to stand trial at a hearing that revealed new details about the June 30 shooting of Matthew Moore as he ran for his life outside Calvary Baptist Church in central Colorado Springs.

Moore, 27, had been kidnapped, police say. He was shot twice in the back while running to a stranger’s home for help.

Berkowitz is a former director of enrollment at the University of Phoenix, responsible for online admissions at the for-profit university, and owned a jewelry store in Aspen. He faces murder and kidnapping charges, among others.
