Boulder County shuts down Red Wagon Farm’s chili-roasting operations amid food safety violations

LAFAYETTE — There’s nothing that says autumn in Colorado like the scent of chili peppers roasting in a slow-turning drum under high heat.

It’s an aroma Red Wagon Organic Farm owner Amy Tisdale was more than familiar with until one day late last month, when she received a cease and desist notice from Boulder County Public Health telling her to shut down the roaster.

Tisdale didn’t have a retail food license and the department said she needed to put into place proper safety measures at her Lafayette farmstand before her Anaheim chilies could go back in the fire.

However, The Red Wagon stand, which is open from Aug. 1 through Oct. 31, continues to sell a wide variety of fruits and vegetables.
