The 21-year-old University of Colorado student who was diagnosed with meningococcal meningitis Friday volunteered at a local day care facility, but Boulder County Public Health officials said none of the children have shown any symptoms of the disease.
Officials are not releasing the name of the day care center in Boulder County, but the families of all 13 children enrolled at the facility have been notified and advised to start their children on antibiotics.
Murielle Romine, a communicable disease program coordinator with Boulder County, said that while it is possible some of the students may have contracted the disease, none of the children have exhibited any of the symptoms so far.
Meningococcal meningitis is a serious bacterial infection that affects the tissue surrounding the brain and spinal cord, and the disease can be spread to others.
