WASHINGTON — NCAA president Mark Emmert backed a proposal to allow conferences to increase grants to student athletes by $2,000, “to more closely approach” the full cost of attending college, beyond the athletic scholarships athletes receive for tuition, fees, room, board and books.

Emmert told the Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics on Monday that the proposal will be finalized this week, and he’ll ask the NCAA Division I board of directors to support it at its meeting Thursday.

Emmert said he’ll also ask the board to allow colleges and universities to provide multiyear grants, instead of year-to-year scholarships.

“We are going to create a model that would allow — probably … up to $2,000 in addition to” tuition, fees, room and board, books and supplies.

U.S. beats 10-time defending baseball champion Cuba

GUADALAJARA, Mexico — The United States beat 10-time defending champion Cuba 12-10 in the baseball semifinals at the Pan American Games.

The Americans, who won their only Pan Am Games title in 1967, led 7-0 in the third inning and stretched their advantage to 12-2 before the Cubans rallied.

Cuba has won 12 of the 15 baseball titles at the Pan Am Games, including every one between 1971 and 2007. The United States has finished second to Cuba eight times.

In gymnastics, the team of Bridgette Caquatto, Jessie DeZiel, Brandie Jay, Shawn Johnson, Grace McLaughlin and Bridget Sloan won the women’s team all-around.

Jay trains out of GK Gymnastics in Fort Collins and was The Denver Post Youth Excellence in Sports winner in August.
