YEMEN: International airport reopens after nearby shelling.
Yemen’s international airport in the capital, Sana, reopened Monday after closing Sunday following explosions at the nearby al-Dailami air-force base. Two military aircraft could be seen on fire after the shelling, al-Jazeera television said. Protests against President Ali Abdullah Saleh and shelling in Sana have continued after the announcement by the government last week that a cease-fire had been reached between Saleh’s forces and those of the opposition.
EGYPT: Marchers protest arrest of activist.
More than 3,000 Egyptians marched Monday through downtown Cairo, protesting the military’s arrest of a prominent blogger-activist. Alaa Abdel- Fattah was ordered held by the military, which says he is suspected of inciting Christian protesters to attack soldiers during an Oct. 9 protest in Cairo. His supporters said the military is trying to silence a prominent critic and to deflect blame in the violence.
SYRIA: Regime accused of arranging kidnapping of dissidents in Lebanon.
Lebanese police have accused Syria of orchestrating the kidnapping of Syrian dissidents in Lebanon. If the accusations are true, they show the long reach of Syrian President Bashar Assad’s government in repressing dissent, as well as the complicity of members of Lebanon’s security forces with their former patrons in Damascus.
