DENVER—Denver police have issued a so-called “Medina Alert” to try to find a hit-and-run driver who fatally struck a pedestrian.

Medina Alerts are new messages that police are sending to taxi drivers to enlist their help in finding hit-and-run drivers. They are named for 21-year-old Jose Medina, who was killed in a hit-and-run crash in January 2011.

The Denver medical examiner’s office said Tuesday that 42-year-old James Garcia of Denver died at a hospital after being struck at Colfax Avenue and Sheridan Boulevard on Monday night.

Police say Garcia was believed to have been struck by a white van that is missing its front grill and has an extended top.
