Trader Joe’s plans to open a third Colorado location, this time in Greenwood Village.
The California-based specialty grocery chain with a huge and enthusiastic fan base has signed a lease at the Cherry Hills Marketplace, 5901 S. University Blvd. at the intersection of East Orchard Road.
The Greenwood Village store is scheduled to open in 2014, Trader Joe’s spokeswoman Alison Mochizuki said Monday.
Trader Joe’s has its — at East Eighth Avenue and Colorado Boulevard in Denver, and Boulder’s Twenty Ninth Street mall. Those two stores also will open in 2014, Mochizuki said.
“We think this is fantastic,” said Matt Cohrs, assistant to the Greenwood Village city manager. “It will be a phenomenal fit. That’s the type of company and the type of retailer that we want.”
The new 10,000-square-foot store is likely to locate in one of two vacant spaces at the Cherry Hills Marketplace — locations previously occupied by Old Navy and Two Mile Ranch Market.
Cohrs said Greenwood Village City Manager Jim Sanderson talked with a Trader Joe’s executive three months ago about the possibility of bringing a store to the community. But the city hadn’t received any feedback until learning Monday about the new lease.
Trader Joe’s is popular for its lines of specialty food products and for low prices on many items — notably Charles Shaw wines that sold for $1.99 and became popularly known as “Two-Buck Chuck.”
However, . Some customers joked that the brand should now be called “Inflation Chuck” or “Upchuck.”
