Before Army Pfc. Josh McCollum left for a nine-month infantry training stint in Kuwait, his younger brother gave him specific orders.

“He told me that he didn’t want me to surprise him when I got back, because it was going to evoke some tears,” McCollum, 26, said.

Wednesday, that request was denied.

McCollum’s brother, Scot Gorter, a junior at Thompson Valley High School, was busy crafting pumpkin-flavored whoopie pies in food science class when the school counselor called him out for a chat. When Gorter got back to class 15 minutes later, his brother was there waiting.
