You don’t have to tell Coloradans about all the money spent on television ads this election cycle — they saw more than their fair share.

And now the final numbers for the 2014 election are in.

In the Colorado U.S. Senate race, candidates and political groups spent an estimated $47.4 million on 67,500 TV ads, according to the Center for Public Integrity, .

Democrats and allies spent $25 million on 35,500 ads and Republicans spent $22.3 million on 31,800 ads.

The total ranked Colorado No. 3 in the nation in terms of TV ad spending in U.S. Senate races, behind only North Carolina ($73.2 million) and Georgia ($47.4 million). Denver in the nation for political ads, a byproduct of its vast reach covering the second largest geographical territory in the nation (second only to Salt Lake City).

All together, nationwide, the center estimated 1 million ads and $477 million in ad spending.

Colorado’s state-level races added another $13.3 million in ad spending with 18,800 ads, . The campaigns surrounding ballot measures actually outspent state-level candidates to throw another $21.3 million and 18,900 ads into the mix, . And this doesn’t include all the spending by local candidates, such as those for the state legislature.

But the total for statewide campaigns — Senate, state government and ballot initiatives — reached $82 million.
