It is time to move forward and pass Colorado’s “death with dignity” legislation. My father, being given an ALS diagnosis in January 2013, passed in September 2013. His wish was to not see this death sentence to its bitter end. He believed his only option was to accomplish this with a handgun that was hidden in his closet. We were able to convince him how poorly this outcome could be as he was barely able to use his hands. He gave me the gun, but wanted another option. He then began to stockpile pain pills with the intention of creating a lethal dose to load into his feeding tube. When he moved to hospice, the pills were discovered and confiscated. He then courageously made the decision to refuse all nourishment. The next 10 days of watching a strong and extremely intelligent man starve himself to death was beyond despair.
