Two Denver police officers are being hailed for going above and beyond expectations after they used their own money to cover the cost of a hotel for a family in need.
Officers Troy Smith and Ryan Vogel met the family while responding to a welfare check late March 13 in the 400 block of West Colfax Avenue.
“When they arrived on scene, they met a man who was with his wife and 6-year-old daughter,” police said in a news release. “The man explained that he was going through a hard time and couldn’t make it in Denver.”
The man told the officers that he was planning to return to a “neighboring city” the next day but the family didn’t have any place to spend the night. Not being from Denver, the family did not qualify for a hotel voucher.
The officers took the family to a nearby hotel to see whether the two could get the family a room, but hotel staffers said they could not provide a room for free.
The officers then paid for the room with their own money, police said.
