Authorities have identified a 20-year-old man shot and killed by police in southern Colorado on Friday who authorities say pointed a gun at an officer.
Todd Jamal Dye, of Colorado Springs, was shot in an armed confrontation when police were called to a trailer park on reports of an “unauthorized individual” at a home, according to officials accounts.
Dye was taken to Mt. San Rafael Hospital where he was pronounced dead, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation said in a news release Tuesday.
Dye was wanted in El Paso County for contempt of court for absconding from a community corrections facility in Colorado Springs, the release said.
“The Trinidad Police Department officer involved in the incident was placed on administrative leave pending the investigation,” the release said. “His name is not being released per Trinidad police protocol.”
CBI, Trinidad police and local prosecutors say their investigation into the shooting remains ongoing.
Officers were called out to the Almar Trailer Park at about 9:15 a.m. on Friday when they encountered Dye, authorities say.
Police report that Dye pointed a gun at an officer as he tried to flee. The officer then fatally shot Dye, according to police.
“Upon an initial search of the scene, the gun (Dye) had pointed at the officer was located,” CBI said in an earlier news release issued last week. “Review of the officer’s body camera video confirmed the officer’s report of the contact.”
