A woman was charged with theft Thursday and accused of taking a puppy from a pet store and selling it.

The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office said Michelle Medina, 39, took the Shiba Inu puppy from the Perfect Pets store, 6840 S. University Blvd., on April 29. The puppy is valued at approximately $1,100.

Officials said surveillance video showed an adult female in her late 20s-early 30s entering the store at about 6:30 p.m. carrying a large handbag which appeared empty. She was seen walking around the pen containing the puppy, and then leaving the store minutes later with the handbag looking heavy and full.

The sheriff’s office said a subsequent investigation, along with tips received from the public, led to the identification of Medina as the person in the video. On Thursday, Medina was contacted by Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office investigators and agreed to an interview during which she admitted taking the puppy from the store and then selling it to an unrelated person.

The puppy was recovered, unharmed, by Sheriff’s Investigators and returned to the Perfect Pets store.
