Gov. John Hickenlooper signs Senate Bill 119 into law May 19 at Ayres Elementary School in Sterling during the kindergarten graduation ceremony. Jefferson County schools said it would not let Hickenlooper hold a bill signing at Lakewood High School this spring, saying it would have been logistically impossible. Re: “Jeffco schools playing politics over Hickenlooper visit,” May 20 editorial.
Your editorial criticizing Jefferson County School District officials for rejecting Gov. John Hickenlooper’s request to stage a bill signing showed ignorance on your part as to how booked up schools become at this time of year. Field trips, testing, graduation ceremony practice and Memorial Day are just some of the events which outside groups run up against in attempting to schedule a visit. I imagine the governor’s event would have caused severe scheduling headaches with the faculty and students.
I am on the opposite of the political spectrum of the majority of the Jeffco school board, but I applaud the districtap insight and common sense in saying no to the governor.
