Getting your player ready...

I recently attended a flag football game at the Auraria sports complex. My 10-year-old friend Liam, a member of the Washington Park Warriors lacrosse team, noticed the Denver Outlaws lacrosse team preparing for practice. I encouraged Liam to check out the players and equipment. He asked Max Schmidt if he could touch his stick. Schmidt agreed and chatted with Liam. As Schmidt approached the field, I apologized for bothering him. He smiled and said, “No.” Then he and several Outlaws players autographed Liam’s Warriors jersey.

For me, that moment was better than the Mean Joe Greene Coke commercial. What I observed of the Outlaws team made me proud to meet nice, grounded athletes who took the time to treat a 67-year-old and a 10-year-old to unrivaled sportsmanship and sincere personal attention.
