A rafter drowned in the Colorado River Saturday afternoon near Glenwood Springs, the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office said.
The man, whose name has not yet been released, was in a raft with another man and a woman when he fell out, according to a news release. The man was pulled back into the raft, but efforts by his companions to resuscitate him — and later by emergency medical technicians from the Glenwood Fire Department — were unsuccessful.
Deputies responded to a call for help from an observer at 12:38 p.m., the release says, and the raft reached the Grizzly Creek Rest Area about four minutes later.
Authorities were working to verify the man’s identity and notify the next of kin, according to the Garfield Sheriff’s Office.
