On Sunday, Sept. 27, The Denver Post profiled the journey of Alison Kluzek, an 18-year-old from Longmont who announced to her parents when she was 15, “I’m a girl.” (Joe Amon, The Denver Post)
Re: “Family’s journey after transgender teen’s announcement,” Oct. 4 letters to the editor.
Connie Holfelder’s letter regarding the story about the Kluzek family journey illustrates perfectly why an article about transgender people should be on the front page. I, too, am disappointed, shocked and astounded — not at the placement of the Denver Post story, but at Holfelder’s petty annoyance over having to thumb past the first page to find stories more to her liking, comfort and complacency.
Letap remind ourselves of the definition of “news”: something that is unexpected, raises new issues, or offers important or fresh information or insight. Gender identity is an important and complex topic that affects more than transgender people and their families. Like it or not, Ms. Holfelder, itap an above-the-fold conversation.
