Two new Weld County solar farms could be just two months away from producing electricity for rural customers, according to Poudre Valley Rural Electric Association.
Nashville-based Silicon Ranch started construction last month on the solar arrays along Colorado 257, east of Loveland and Fort Collins, with the electric co-op as its customer. PVREA, which distributes power to more than 38,000 customers in Larimer, Weld and Boulder counties, has a 20-year contract to buy about 8 megawatts of power or enough to serve 1,300 homes.
Co-op spokeswoman Amy Blunck said each 70-acre field will contain 50,000 photovoltaic panels covering 32 acres. She said the arrays could be energized by December.
Silicon Ranch president and CEO Matt Kisber said the construction would inject $8 million into the local economy.
