Lakewood police have identified the victim of a as a 45-year-old woman.

Ernestine Maynes was killed in an accident that occurred near the intersection of Colfax Avenue and Wadsworth Boulevard.

The driver, Jonathan Cordova, 53, is being held for investigation of vehicular homicide, hit and run and felony drunken driving.

Cordova was driving west at about 11:45 p.m. that night when he drove his car into Maynes, who was crossing the avenue in the middle of the road.

After the collision, Cordova allegedly kept driving his 2012 Mitsubishi Galant. A witness followed Cordova’s car and reported his license plate number to police.

The vehicle was located at an apartment complex near 14th Avenue and Garrison Street.

Cordova has a history of driving under the influence dating back to 1983 and other traffic-related offenses.

He is expect to be in Jefferson County District Court on Friday for the formal filing of charges.

According to the arrest affidavit, Cordova told police he was released Oct. 4 from his latest DUI charge. He told police he had been drinking Thursday night in Central City and took a bus back to the Lakewood area. He then drove to a local bar, had “two or three beers” and drove to his girlfriend’s house.

Cordova told police he knew he hit something, but didn’t know it was a person. He later told police, “she stepped in front of me.” He was then taken into custody.
