Fairview senior Sandra Freeman has qualified for the Olympic Trials in late June in Omaha, Neb.

Also signed to compete at Northwestern, Freeman will give it a go in the 400-meter individual medley.

For now, Freeman, also a freestyler, and the other Knights are focusing on winning a team state championship in Class 5A.

If they do, they’ll credit longtime coach Bob Smartt, an energetic and savvy 61-year-old who has overseen a classy, strong and academically-balanced Fairview team.

“I like Bob,” Freeman said. “I think he’s just so invested in our team, as much as any of our swimmers, if not a lot more. Think of how much time and effort he spends with the team and how much he does for us. It really reflects how well we swim.

“I think we wouldn’t be anywhere near where we are without him. He’s pretty important.”
