Interview with Zach Nigut, community manager
Q: How did you get involved in this business?
A: I realized I had to find a more productive place to work after struggling with the distractions of working from a home office. After experimenting and touring many of the Denver co-working spaces, we decided to start our own. Entrepreneurs and independent workers along the corridor from Golden to Evergreen were looking for a community of like-minded people to work alongside. They wanted to break free from the isolation and distraction of working at home or in a coffee shop and be part of a creative, professional community where they would increase their productivity and have others to network with. We think we have created this environment with their help.
Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?
A: Genesee Labs is different from other co-working spaces because we offer many private offices. We find that most professionals prefer to have their own space within the larger community space. We provide offices fully furnished (many with sit/stand desks) and access to printers, scanner and a full kitchen. We offer two decks and a barbecue for summer outings or private work time. Additionally, we have a lounge area and two conference rooms (one for larger gatherings and one for a more “classroom” setting). We have an ideal location for foothills residents who prefer not to commute “down the hill” and a view of the Continental Divide for those coming up from down the hill. In addition to the amenities, we have put our focus on building our community and friendships. Everyone at “The Labs” gets along and we enjoy our monthly social events like beer tastings, cocktail contests and even a chili cook-off.
Q: What do you like best about your line of work?
A: The absolute best part of “The Labs” is the mix of people and professions. We have high-tech, oil and gas, marketing, architects, recruiters and educators. Each one brings a unique perspective to conversations, brainstorming and problem-solving. There is no shortage of creativity.
Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?
A: Growth. We are fortunate to have grown organically based on need, and have built a wonderful community that rarely turns over. With our dedicated offices full, we talk about how we could use other spaces in the building. We are still working on a growth plan.
Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:
A: The biggest surprise to people who do not know us is that we are a co-working environment and that we have been in this business for two years. We have a physical space that promotes individual work, group work and class work. We provide business-class Internet and coffee to keep people moving at high speeds (along with a dedicated beer fridge).
