The National Weather Service in Boulder rolled out one of its newest toys a few weeks before Christmas, and like other people’s news sleds and skis, the forecasters’ shiny new gadget will probably get a heavy workout this week.

offering visitors three different scenarios for an approaching winter storm: “expect at least this much,” “most likely snowfall” and “potential for this much.”

The page offers a suite of other related forecast tools.

As of 4 p.m. Wednesday, visitors to the site could see that Boulder’s most likely snow total by 5 p.m. Friday was 8 to 12 inches. It also showed that Boulder should receive at least 5 inches.

The “potential for this much” map, as of 4 p.m. Wednesday, suggested Boulder could receive as much as 13 inches. The “potential” map showed the greatest potential snow total for the state coming in Vail, at 18 inches, with Pagosa Springs and Silverton tied for second, with 16 inches each.
