Grocery grab

To help kick-off 2017 with better choices, WhiteWave Foods brands (including Earthbound Farm, Horizon, International Delight, Silk and So Delicious) is surprising shoppers by purchasing their entire cart of groceries. On Jan. 18, 25 lucky Safeway shoppers with at least one WhiteWave product in their cart will get all of their groceries for free. Secret shoppers will be on the lookout for qualifying carts from 3 to 6 p.m. (or until all cart buys are completed) at each location. Five carts will be purchased at each of the participating locations: Boulder, 3325 28th St.; Castle Rock, 880 S. Perry St.; Superior, 1601 Coalton Road; and two locations in Denver, at 2150 S. Downing St. and 3800 W. 44th Ave. Winning carts will be selected at random. You never know who might be a secret shopper, so it’s a good excuse to smile at strangers.

Steer clear

Get up close and personal with the National Western Stock Show’s 2017 Grand Champion steer. Just mosey on over to The Brown Palace Hotel (321 17th St., Denver) on Jan. 20. The prize animal, adorned with a garland of roses, will be escorted down a red carpet at 11 a.m. to take center stage during afternoon tea in the famed hotel’s lobby. This is the steer’s last hurrah before heading to the auction of champions later in the evening. The public is welcome to join in for free photos with the champ from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Rodeo royalty of the two-legged kind will also be on hand for pictures and autographs.

Fill ‘er up

Gas up at an Exxon, Mobil or Shell gas station and get a buy-one-get-one free lift ticket deal. The offer is valid at Copper Mountain, Crested Butte, Monarch, Powderhorn or Sunlight Mountain Resorts. To qualify, you must purchase 10 gallons or more of gas. Ask the station attendant for a validated Ski Free voucher and to stamp your gas receipt. (Shell stations will have the vouchers starting Jan. 19.) Next, take the validated voucher and stamped gas receipt to the ski area’s lift ticket window. Purchase a one-day, full-price adult lift ticket and receive a second one for free. (Both tickets must be used on the same day). The program runs through April 16, or until the ski area closes for the season. There may be restrictions and/or blackout dates at a specific resort, so read the fine print first.

Dine and cash

Want to get paid to eat? It’s possible, thanks to Food & Drink Resources (FDR.) The company just opened its FDR Innovation Center (6555 S. Kenton St. #302, Centennial), with two fully-equipped test kitchens where clients can test new food and beverage concepts. They regularly host focus groups and taste tests, so they’re in need of consumers willing to eat and share their feedback. The consumer research projects pay between $50 and $250, depending on the type of study and time commitment. It’s free to sign-up online at . After registering, FDR will contact you periodically about your dining preferences to determine your qualifications for a particular study. Don’t just show up at the facility without an invitation — you need to qualify and be accepted for a focus group or taste test. Otherwise, you will be turned away.
