The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office’s tracking bloodhound died unexpectedly Thursday after undergoing a pair of surgeries for a medical issue that developed while the dog was off-duty.

The dog, named Jason after a character on the 1970s TV show “The Waltons,” was a few days shy of his 6th birthday.

Boulder County Deputy Cathy Bryarly had previously gotten a bloodhound from 832 Deputy Dogs, a foundation in Florida that trains bloodhounds and gives them to law enforcement agencies. She was able to request a puppy and got the 11-week-old bloodhound in 2011.

Together, the two were deployed more than 170 times. While many were missing-person or criminal cases, a lot of their work was educating the community and working with kids. The pair’s most recent case involved the search for  whose body was found in a pond.

Bryarly said the dog began acting strangely Wednesday night after eating. The vet discovered the dog had a twisted spleen and needed surgery to have it removed. He began bleeding internally after the procedure and a second surgery Thursday to stop the bleeding was unsuccessful.
