Re: April 17 news story.
As Republican state Senate President Kevin Grantham urges his fellow legislators to “do our job,” he should consider that their job calls for advancing the well-being of Colorado rather than promoting slavish obeisance to the outdated principles of minimal government and aversion to all tax increases, no matter the need for additional revenue.
The cases in point deal with resources for state hospitals, allocations for transportation and a referendum to increase the state sales tax to provide much-needed highway funding. GOP intransigence could lead to the closing of many rural hospitals, which is ironic since rural areas are traditional Republican strongholds.
Furthermore, a failure to refer the highway tax measure to voters would deny them the right to decide on taxes as per TABOR, and belie the familiar GOP mantra of “Jobs, jobs, jobs,” so prominent at election time.
