It will be downright balmy on Wednesday in Denver. Enjoy it while it lasts, because an arctic storm is barreling towards Colorado.

The high temperature could reach 63 degrees. But on Thursday temperatures will drop nearly 40 degrees to around 24, according to the National Weather Service in Boulder.

Snow is expected to start falling around 2 a.m. The chance for snow is 80 percent and between 1 and 3 inches of snow is expected in Denver. Up to 6 inches of snow is expected for Fairplay in the mountains.

The low temperature will be around 10 degrees Thursday night, but wind chill values could drop it to below zero, the NWS says.

A second arctic system is expected late Friday night, when there is a 40 percent chance of snow. There’s a 60 percent chance of snow before 11 a.m.

The high temperature Saturday will be around 17 degrees. The low Saturday night will be around 1 degree, the weather service says.

Temperatures will begin to rebound on Christmas Eve, with a high of 26 degrees.

The cold temperatures could ensure any snow that falls this week won’t melt, giving parts of the Denver metro area a white Christmas. The low Christmas morning will be around 8 degrees.

It will be mostly sunny on Christmas Day, and the temperature could reach 38 degrees, the weather service says.
