A truck driver speeding westbound on Colfax Avenue lost control of his vehicle after Broadway and rammed into the railing, taking out a large portion of the barrier Friday night.

The driver, who witnesses said looked very beaten up, survived and was taken to the hospital. No one else was injured.

“He came flying down the hill,” said KayteAnen Montgomery, who was walking down Colfax Avenue when the crash occurred around 10:30 p.m. “He went right through the red lights at Lincoln and Broadway. He just missed traffic.”

She said the driver, who she guessed was going at least 60 mph, tried to switch lanes when Colfax Avenue began to curve but lost control. His back tires flipped around, going through the railing first. Debris from the truck, ranging from a lawn mower to a toolbox, was flung several yards away from the vehicle.

Denver Police Department Sgt. David Albi said first responders cut the driver out of his truck. He didn’t know the man’s name or if he had been charged but said there’s a possibility he could face careless or reckless driving charges.

Colfax Avenue is closed between Broadway and Bannock Street as investigators evaluate the scene. Albi wasn’t sure when the road would re-open but said it’ll like be closed for a while.
