The Rockies placed reliever Mike Dunn on the disabled list on Friday with a left rhomboid strain and recalled Jeff Hoffman from Triple-A Albuquerque to take his place on the 25-man roster.
The strain causes pain in the upper back between the shoulder blade and spine; the injury could heal in as quickly as a few weeks, but a more severe strain takes six weeks or longer to get better.
Dunn is getting an MRI to get more information on the severity of the injury.
After a rough start to the season by way of a 9.45 ERA in April, the left-hander seemed to settle into his role in May, posting a 1.29 ERA in seven innings.
But the wheels fell off for Dunn in his last four outings, a span in which he’s recorded only four outs while giving up six runs and walking four.
In his most recent appearance, during Colorado’s extra-innings collapse to end the series in Cincinnati, Dunn loaded the bases with no outs in the eighth, opening the floodgates for a Reds comeback.
Meanwhile, Hoffman posted an 3-4 mark with a 4.29 ERA in 50.1 innings with the Isotopes.
