U.S. 285 near Fairplay reopens after short closure due to extreme winds

Stretch from Fairplay to just west of Grant was shut down Monday evening after a semi overturned

The Colorado Department of Transportation reopened U.S. 285 between Colorado 9 at Fairplay to just west of Grant at around 7:30 p.m. after closing the stretch two hours earlier because of winds that were strong enough to overturn a semi-trailer, .

The closed stretch covered 26 miles, from mile point 183 to mile point 209, in both directions. A high wind restriction remains in place for all high-profile vehicles or light trailers, and slower speeds are advised.

Wind speeds were blowing at 12 mph in Grant, with gusts up to 29 mph, and Fairplay was seeing winds at 21 mph with gusts of up to 38 mph at the time of the closure, .

The Park County Sheriff notified the that at 5:17 p.m., Highway 285 was closed after a semi-trailer overturned at mile marker 188. CDOT issued a high wind caution for all of Park County on Monday morning and that remains in effect.
