Denver Fire Department crews responded to a commercial structure , 825 N. Colorado Blvd., at 4:31 p.m. and found heavy smoke coming from the roof, agency officials said in a news release.

Firefighters went in the kitchen and found the stove was on fire and had extended through the exhaust hood and into the roof.

Crews coordinated to extinguish both the kitchen and roof fires and “aggressively attacked” the flames, the fire department said.

Paramedics treated one restaurant employee for smoke inhalation.

staff could not immediately be reached for comment. The restaurant was founded and is operated by siblings Reza and Nadia Ahmadi and features their grandmother’s recipes, according to its website.

The Denver Fire Department’s investigation unit ruled the cause of the fire as undetermined after almost five months looking into the case, the Denver Department of Public Safety said in a news release.

Fire crews responded to the park at 2:40 a.m. March 26 after Denver Zoo security workers called in the fire, and firefighters arrived on scene to find the structure already fully consumed.

Although city officials initially said the overnight fire was suspicious, investigators did not find enough evidence to determine what happened.

Investigators reviewed video, inspected the bandstand’s electrical system and ordered forensic tests on fire debris to check for ignitable liquids. They found nothing unusual in the electrical system and no evidence of ignitable liquids, and they could not identify anyone who saw the fire start.

Denver Parks and Recreation leaders are planning to this fall after inspectors determined the structure could not be salvaged.

, a union that represents firefighters in Denver, Englewood, Glendale, Sheridan and Skyline, has been trying to disaffiliate from Colorado’s statewide firefighters union since late 2024, but the state and international unions have refused to recognize the local chapter’s departure, according to the lawsuit filed in Denver District Court on Monday.

, the statewide union, says the local chapter owes nearly $389,000 in unpaid dues, according to the lawsuit. Denver Fire Fighters Local 858 stopped paying dues to the statewide union in September 2024, when its executive board voted to pause payments in light of growing concern that the statewide union wasn’t providing enough value to justify the payments, according to the complaint.

In November 2024, the local union’s executive board voted to disaffiliate from the statewide union. That initial vote was followed by two membership votes: one in March 2025 in which 59% of members who voted agreed to disaffiliate, and another in March 2026 in which 70% of members who voted opted to forfeit the local union’s charter with the state union.

Despite those votes, Colorado Professional Fire Fighters has refused to accept that separation, according to the complaint.

The lawsuit names both the statewide union and the — a union that represents firefighters in the U.S. and Canada — as defendants in the case. The international union has refused to recognize Denver Fire Fighters Local 858’s separation because the local union did not follow the international union’s procedures for leaving, according to the complaint.

The local union argues both that the union was not obligated to follow the regulations and that, if it were required to follow the regulations, it did so.

Tim Burn, a spokesman for the International Association of Fire Fighters, said in a statement Tuesday that the union had hoped to handle the dispute internally.

“The IAFF has internal processes to democratically address and resolve the concerns of any member or local affiliate,” the statement said. “Those internal processes, including charges of misconduct against several Executive Board members of Local 858, are still pending. We are disappointed that they have instead attempted to bypass the union’s constitution and by-laws with the support of an anti-union law firm largely funded by the Koch Foundation.”

Representatives of Colorado Professional Fire Fighters did not return a request for comment Tuesday.

Denver Fire Department crews responded to a , 1320 E. 17th Ave., and made “quick work” of putting out the flames, agency officials said on social media.

No one was injured in the fire, which fire officials said began outside before extending inside. In an email, restaurant co-owner Suman KC said the fire caused major damage to the kitchen and roof.

The restaurant is closed with no estimated reopening, he said.

The fire also damaged the back patio of the neighboring , closing the restaurant for the day. Denver fire officials gave Hamburger Mary’s the go-ahead to reopen Thursday, the restaurant said on Facebook.

The is now the only department authorized to send citywide public safety alerts via the wireless system, meaning that if 911 employees want to use the system, they have to receive approval from the executive director of safety, Mayor Mike Johnston’s office announced on Monday.

Otherwise, 911 employees will use reverse emergency notifications — or REN —  to send residents information about incidents via calls, text messages or emails if they have opted into alerts for specific locations, the city said.

REN doesn’t have the ability to send an alert citywide, said Matthew Mueller, executive director of the Office of Emergency Management.

The city will continue to use the wireless system for severe or widespread emergencies, but will require a minimum of three approvals before localized alerts are sent, according to the news release.

The city has used the wireless system in the past to send residents information related to the pandemic and during the racial justice protests in 2020, Mueller said.

City employees are also now required to have the confirmation before using sirens during storms. All employees who interact with the city’s emergency notification systems will receive annual training on the procedures, the mayor’s office announced.

The changes were made after the city sent three errant alerts to residents in recent months, including when a member of the sounded a siren across the city earlier this month after he received a false report of a tornado.

In April, an alert about a robbery in the Ruby Hill neighborhood was mistakenly sent to residents citywide. A similar incident happened in January, when the city pushed out a widespread warning about an “active threat” near the

The city’s emergency and department officials conducted a review of Denver’s public notification process this week, according to the news release.

WestJet officials confirmed there was an issue involving a flight headed to Calgary, Alberta, Canada, in an emailed statement, but did not detail what happened on board.

The incident happened at around 12:30 p.m., airport spokesperson Ashley Forest said. No one was injured, and Forest referred all other questions to WestJet.

Flight 1571 was scheduled to depart Denver International Airport for Calgary at 12:15 p.m. Thursday, . The plane left the gate at 12:08 p.m., but never finished taxiing.

According to recordings of radio communication between air traffic controllers and the pilot shared on ATC.com, the airplane’s two left main gear tires blew out during takeoff. The tires were smoking, but there were no visible flames after the incident, controllers said on the recording.

The Denver Police Department declined to comment on the incident and referred questions to the airport and WestJet. The Denver Fire Department also referred questions to the airport.

Denver District Judge Andrew Luxen issued an order Thursday finding Tony Becerra, 38, incompetent. , the finding means a defendant is unable to understand the legal proceedings or help in their defense.

Becerra is due in court July 16 for a status conference on his condition, said Matt Jablow, spokesman for the Denver District Attorney’s Office.

Becerra was arrested in January for the fire that roared through the apartment complex under construction along Leetsdale Drive. The fire that broke out Jan. 2 burned for several days was described by officials as the worst fire Denver crews had battled in at least 30 years.

The Denver Fire Department said Becerra was seen on surveillance footage entering and leaving the area shortly before flames started. People who called 911 reported seeing a person entering the building.

An arrest affidavit said Becerra was seen filling a container with gasoline at  a station near East Colfax Avenue and Yosemite Street in Aurora about one hour before he walked onto the construction site. Surveillance video showed the Aurora man putting a black bag on the ground near a gas pump and filling up something inside the bag, investigators said.

From there, Becerra took an RTD bus to 8th Avenue and Colorado Boulevard and walked south on Colorado to Leetsdale Drive, according to the affidavit.

Flames quickly destroyed the building. The heat of the fire melted siding and shattered windows of several homes in Denver’s Hilltop neighborhood. More than 100 firefighters battled the fire.

Jablow said Becerra faces 28 felonies: 27 for arson and one for burglary.

The 283-unit apartment complex was being built by Texas-based Embrey Partners at 5377 Leetsdale Drive.

Denver Fire Department crews responded to the two-alarm fire at an apartment complex in the 8500 block of East Hampden Avenue, agency officials said at 3:22 p.m.

Firefighters were able to knock down the fire, but it spread throughout the building, department leaders said.

Denver Fire Department investigators also responded to the scene.

The cause of the fire and number of people displaced were not immediately available.

Emergency crews responded to the airport at 11:19 p.m. after during takeoff, DIA officials said in a statement early Saturday.

Denver Fire Department crews quickly extinguished the engine fire on the Airbus A321, and passengers evacuated the plane via slides. Twelve people reported minor injuries, and five were taken to the hospital, according to the airport.

A video on social media showed the Los Angeles-bound flight speeding up for takeoff before the collision, then a loud noise as flames and debris are seen outside the plane, near wing and engine.

Airport officials said the pedestrian, who has not been identified, jumped over a perimeter fence about two minutes before the crash. DIA officials do not believe the person was an airport employee.

Airport workers “examined the fence line and found it to be intact,” DIA leaders said on X at 7:31 a.m.

Air traffic control recordings confirmed the crash and engine fire, according to the site .

“We’re stopping on the runway,” the pilot told the control tower in the recording. “We just hit somebody. We have an engine fire.”

The air traffic controller responded that they are “rolling the trucks now” before the pilot told the tower about “smoke in the aircraft. We are going to evacuate on the runway.”

There were 223 passengers and seven crew members on the Frontier flight, and most passengers were taken to the terminal by bus and have since left on a different Frontier flight, DIA and airline officials said.

One of those passengers, Victoria Lohman, she heard a “huge bang” as the plane was going down the runway.

“Everyone got really frightened, and understandably so,” she said.

Another passenger, Jacob Athens, posted a video showing people sliding down with their backpacks. He also posted photos of what looked like a damaged engine.

“As we were lifting off, the engine of the plane exploded. There was so much smoke we couldn’t even see 1 ft in front of us,” Athens said on his Facebook page, adding that passengers had to wait for more than an hour on the runway.

Denver police said the crash is under investigation, and no additional information was available as of Saturday afternoon.

The crash did not appear to impact other DIA flights on Saturday, with only 113 delays and reported by airlines on FlightAware.

Airport officials notified the National Transportation Safety Board about the collision and said runway 17L reopened as of 11 a.m.

NTSB spokesperson Sarah Taylor Sulick said the agency is coordinating with the Federal Aviation Administration, airport authorities and local police to gather information about the crash. The FAA also confirmed an investigation.

U.S. released a statement about the crash on X, stating that “no one should EVER trespass on an airport.”

The crash comes one day after a Delta Air Lines employee was killed while on the job at the Orlando International Airport in Florida. In a statement, Delta officials said the employee was killed Thursday night without providing details of the incident nor the name of the employee.
