Deputies were searching the backyard of a home in the 6900 block of Dexter Street when a 32-year-old man emerged from the house with a gun, according to a .

Deputies “gave commands to the man” before two deputies shot him, sheriff’s officials said. Officials did not specify Tuesday morning what those commands were and said it was unknown if the man had fired his weapon.

It’s unclear if the man was connected to the earlier stabbing, which happened about one-tenth of a mile away from the shooting scene just after 1 a.m. Tuesday, near the intersection of East 70th Avenue and Dexter Street. That man fled before law enforcement arrived, prompting deputies to search the area, according to the sheriff’s office.

No deputies were injured in the shooting.

Paramedics took the man shot by deputies to the hospital with unknown injuries. His identity had not been released publicly Tuesday.

The deputies involved in the shooting were placed on administrative leave pending the results of the investigation, standard procedure for police shootings, sheriff’s officials said.

Man accused of murder in Thornton stabbed brother in the neck, affidavit alleges /2026/04/09/thornton-murder-stabbing-zamien-rivas/ Thu, 09 Apr 2026 18:41:16 +0000 /?p=7479311 A man faces first-degree murder charges after allegedly stabbing his brother in the neck in a Thornton parking lot, according to court records.

Thornton officers responded to a “bleeding and unresponsive” man at an , 8700 Grant St., just before 11 p.m. on March 25, according to an arrest affidavit. The parking lot was empty when officers arrived, aside from the injured man, but several people were spotted walking on a nearby bridge that connected the east and west RTD parking lots, the affidavit stated.

Paramedics took the man, identified in the affidavit as 29-year-old Stephen Rivas, to the hospital, where he died from a stab wound to the neck, police said. His brother, 25-year-old Zamien Rivas, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in his death, Adams County court records show.

The woman who called 911 told investigators that she heard the two brothers arguing in the parking lot about Stephen Rivas claiming to be a Crips gang member, according to the affidavit.

She called the police when she saw the older brother collapsed on the ground, but didn’t see what caused his injury, police said.

One man said he saw a man he believed to be Zamien Rivas collapse over Stephen Rivas’ body in the parking lot after the fight, yelling “no Stevie” and “don’t die Stevie,” the affidavit stated. Zamien Rivas and an unidentified girl ran from the parking lot to the RTD bus terminal when they heard police sirens, leaving Stephen’s body behind, the man told police.

The witness and his girlfriend ended up on the same bus as the couple who ran and overheard their conversation, according to the affidavit.

Zamien Rivas was crying and kept saying “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to do this,” the girlfriend told police. She said she saw Zamien throw a knife during his fight with Stephen, which he picked up before fleeing the scene, the affidavit stated.

Zamien Rivas was arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder and will next appear in court on May 14, according to court records. He is being held at the Adams County Sheriff’s Detention Facility without bail, .

2 students covered in fake blood staged active shooter hoax at Adams City High School, police say /2026/03/12/adams-city-high-school-bomb-threat-active-shooter/ Thu, 12 Mar 2026 13:11:35 +0000 /?p=7451151 Two students at are accused of calling in a fake bomb threat and a false claim of an active shooter at the Commerce City school on Wednesday, then covering themselves in something meant to look like blood, police said.

The two teens, who were not identified by police because they are juveniles, were arrested on charges of false reporting of explosives and false reporting of an active shooter, both felonies, and interference with staff or faculty of an educational facility, a misdemeanor, the said Wednesday evening.

Hundreds of law enforcement officers from across metro Denver responded to Adams City High, 7200 Quebec Parkway, around 1 p.m. after someone called 911 to report a bomb at the school and the presence of an active shooter, with wounded people supposedly inside the facility, authorities said.

Officials put the school on lockdown, with students and staff secured inside classrooms. Adams City High currently enrolls 1,422 students, according to state records.

Police entered the school, going room to room to clear the building and look for a shooter and any victims, officials said.

Once inside, officers found “what appeared to be a blood trail in several areas of the school,” Commerce City police said.

After searching the school for two hours, police determined there were no victims and no real threat. But they found and arrested two students “who were covered in what looked like fake blood — the same substance officers had encountered in parts of the building,” police said.

“For many, calls of this nature are their worst nightmare,” Commerce City police Chief Darrel Guadnola said in a statement. “Whether a first responder, a parent, a teacher or a student — most will never forget this day. The notion that this call may have been part of a prank is highly disturbing and pulled valuable law enforcement resources away from real emergencies in the Denver metro.”

No students were injured during the lockdown, but one experienced an unrelated medical issue and was transported to a hospital by paramedics as a precaution, . That student was later released to their parents.

District officials also noted that social media posts shared by people who weren’t employees of the district spread inaccurate information that may have alarmed families.

“Adams 14 encourages the public to avoid sharing unverified information on social media during incidents, as it can unintentionally increase fear and confusion for families, divert law enforcement resources and place additional strain on those working to protect students,” Adams 14 officials said in their statement.

Law enforcement officers from the Adams County Sheriff’s Office, Colorado State Patrol, Westminster Police Department, Thornton Police Department, RTD Police Department, Arvada Police Department, Aurora Police Department, the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives responded to the school.

1 killed, Adams County sheriff’s deputy injured in early morning shooting /2026/01/16/police-74th-broadway-adams-county-shooting/ Fri, 16 Jan 2026 13:35:15 +0000 /?p=7395919 One person was killed and an Adams County deputy was seriously injured in a shooting at a north metro Denver apartment complex early Friday morning, the Adams County Sheriff’s Office said.

The deputy, who was shot multiple times, is in stable condition in the intensive care unit at the hospital, Sheriff Gene Claps said at a .

Deputies first responded to the area near 7401 Broadway at 2:30 a.m. for a 911 call about a disturbance involving weapons, Claps said. The address matches that of Caraway Apartments.

Deputies found a group of people who fled the scene and one person was arrested, Claps said.

Law enforcement remained in the area and at 5 a.m. tried to contact a group of people matching the description of the initial group, leading to another foot chase.

Sheriff’s officials then established a perimeter and started searching the apartment complex, which is when a deputy was shot multiple times in a stairwell, Claps said. Two other people were found in the vicinity, including a man who was shot at least once. The second person found in the area was detained.

Both the deputy and the injured man were taken to the hospital, and the man was pronounced dead at 7:28 a.m., Claps said.

“We believe we’ve located everyone associated with this incident and there is no threat to the community,” Claps said.

One person is still in custody, but additional information about that person was not available Friday night, Sgt. Shea Haney said.

The shooting is still under investigation and the sheriff’s office could not confirm if the man who died was shot by law enforcement.

The 17th Judicial District Critical Response Team, which investigates use of force incidents, is investigating the shooting.

Officials expect a large police presence in the neighborhood will continue Friday night and into Saturday, Claps said.

Largest meth seizure in Colorado history was discovered in boxes of chayote squash /2025/11/19/largest-meth-bust-colorado-fruit/ Wed, 19 Nov 2025 20:51:48 +0000 /?p=7344201 The largest seizure of methamphetamine in Colorado history — 733 pounds — was discovered concealed in boxes of the produce chayote.

During a Wednesday morning news conference, officials with the Offices of U.S. Attorney for the District of Colorado, Drug Enforcement Administration, Federal Bureau of Investigation and Internal Revenue Service announced the largest meth bust in state history and described the work that went into the seizure.

Fifteen people were indicted by a federal grand jury in connection with the case, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. One of the defendants, Marco Antonio De Silva Lara, is facing “the so-called drug kingpin charge as an alleged leader of a drug trafficking organization,” the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.

Despite calling a news conference and convening a gaggle of reporters, none of the agencies took questions from the media.

“This investigation had it all,” DEA Special Agent In Charge Dave Olesky said during the news conference. “From undercover activity to a series of complex wiretaps on targets of the investigation.”

Olesky described the operation as a “massive undertaking” spanning two years and multiple agencies. The bust was the result of wire tapping, undercover operations, about 75 search warrants and “extensive” surveillance,” he said.

Defendants named in the indictment include: De Silva Lara, Sergio Ivan Arce Lopez, Juan Luis Cabrera Saucedo, Luis Enrique Lopez Lopez, Rigoberto Aranda, Erik Alejandro Benitez Chavez, Robert Shane Gerstner, Joseph Ricardo Menzor, William Joseph Rollins, Brittney Pierce, Francisco Javier Armenta Barraza, Jamie Cash Hoover, Cesar Andres Huizar Guerra and Trenton Anthony Thompson. Eleven of those defendants are in federal custody. The remaining defendants are believed to be in Mexico, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

The operation consisted of multiple drug busts beginning in December 2024 when agents seized 96 pounds of meth from a member of the alleged organization on a Greyhound Bus in Vail. In February, officials seized 101 pounds of meth and a half kilogram of fentanyl powder from another alleged organization member on “a highway in Colorado.” In April, more than 700 pounds of meth was taken from a Lakewood residence along with freezers, propane tanks and other equipment used to make meth.

Investigators said they found thousands of packages of meth hidden among containers of the fruit chayote.

More than 700 pounds of methamphetamine were found concealed in boxes of chayote, a type of squash, during a two-year operation in Colorado. In August, officials took nearly 50 pounds of meth from an Arvada residence.

All 15 defendants face drug charges carrying the potential sentence of no less than 10 years and up to life in federal prison, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Four of the defendants are charged with money laundering.

In addition to the DEA, FBI and IRS, the Homeland Security Investigations and ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations are also involved in the investigation along with the Adams County Sheriff’s Office, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and the Arvada Police Department.

The Transnational Organized Crime and Money Laundering Section of the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Colorado is handling the prosecutions, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

“This successful investigation boasts the largest methamphetamine seizure in Colorado history and intercepted more than 1,000 pounds of methamphetamine before it could be distributed into our community,” said United States Attorney for the District of Colorado Peter McNeilly. “This investigation showcases what we are able to accomplish when we combine the resources, tools, and expertise of federal agencies with the passion, experience, and sweat equity of local law enforcement officers.”
