
The Rockies have yet to officially announce their starter for Sunday’s regular season finale against the Nationals at , but there’s a strong possibility that would take the hill in that game if the scenario demanded it.
Manager Bud Black said will pitch against Washington on Friday and going Saturday, and while he wouldn’t confirm Sunday’s starter, he said throwing someone on short rest is a distinct possibility.
“I think all options are open,” Black said. “And for sure, (short-rest starts) are open. I’m not opposed to that at all.”
Sunday would be projected turn in the rotation, and is slated to be re-evaluated following a potential bullpen session on Friday. But Marquez would be the obvious choice for Sunday should Colorado’s divisional and/or overall playoff hopes still hang in the balance entering game No. 162.
That means the 23-year-old right-hander could pitch Sunday on three days rest, as he’s coming off an electric 11-strikeout performance on Wednesday in which he tied the modern major league record with eight consecutive Ks to begin a game.
Marquez passed Ubaldo Jimenez for the most strikeouts by a Colorado pitcher in a single season, with his tally current standing at 221, and also tied Jimenez with a franchise-record 12th consecutive quality start. He’s been nearly untouchable in the second half, posting a 2.55 ERA while allowing just five home runs.
