After the homecoming: Stories of four Colorado homeless veterans

During a summer therapy visit to Craig Hospital from her hometown in Iowa, top left, Mackenzie Gorden's arm reach improved from 10 inches to 14 inches, small differences that can make big gains for independent living. Top right: Karen Gorden was rarely far from her daughter's side during weeks of intensive locomotor training. Above: Karen helps Mackenzie into the car for their long drive back to Iowa. "But no matter how bad I feel about my situation, I know hers is worse," Karen said. "I've never seen her fall apart or say, 'Why me?' So how dare I complain when I can walk out that door."

A paralyzed bridesmaid defies disability

ENGLEWOOD, CO. - AUGUST 27: Wires hang from James Nall as he works out with clinical exercise specialist, Taylor Martinez, left, on the RT600 FES Elliptical at the Peak Center at Craig Hospital in Englewood, CO August 27, 2013. Martinez attached 24 electrodes to Nall to stimulate different muscle groups. Nall hangs in a harness and his feet are secured into the elliptical. A computer controls the speed, weight distribution and the amount of stimulation being distributed to different muscle groups. It's James first time on the machine in 2 months. He describes the electrical stimulation, "they fire sequentially to aid in a gate pattern. The exhaustion doesn't hit you until after脡 I'll go home and sleep for 5 hours. I'm cranking every muscle at 140 milliamps. I do feel pain but it's pain I can block." Before he is finished he attempts to stand with the help of Martinez. James holds steady in his turn as a guinea pig in a training exercise for Craig's director of physical therapy, Candy Tefertiller. He volunteers, he says, because he feels Tefertiller is on a mission, and "Craig Hospital has done so much for me, anyway I can give back, I'll do it."

Cecil struggles to push Carl up a hill after a trip to Little Man Ice Cream in Denver. At 84, Cecil says his commitment can be challenging at times but he knows the outings are important to Carl. "Of course, I think anybody in his position would feel this way," Cecil said. "I just can't take him out five or six days a week... I think he just likes the idea of getting out of the home."

Building an orchestra:Cellist Alix Gates arrives for rehearsal with the Denver Philharmonic Orchestra at the KPOF Concert Hall at East 12th Avenue and Sherman St. Gates recalled her introduction to orchestral music, "In the third grade we basically had a petting zoo for instruments. I really wanted to play the bass." She said her family already owned a cello, "so my parents said we could compromise and I could play the next biggest instrument." Gates, 23, who works in health policy, says playing the cello is therapeutic. "I don't know what I would do without it. I come home from a day of work and stress, and I can lose myself in it." She enjoys playing with a community orchestra because "we're volunteers, so people are there because they want to be there." She says, while there are times she might not want to go to rehearsal, "there's moments when I have deadlines at work but in the end, I go, and I feel better because I took that break and disappeared for awhile."
