Dennis Kennedy

My name is Dennis O’Neill Michael Christopher Kennedy, and I’m only half-Irish, otherwise you’d still be reading my name. The oldest of five kids from St. Louis, I was in seventh grade at Seven Holy Founders Catholic school when I decided I wanted to be a priest. The order I joined is called the Vincentians, after Vincent de Paul. I went through their high school, novitiate year, four-year college, and four-year theology school. We did school year-round, so by the time I was ordained a priest in 1973, I already had two masters degrees, one from attending summer school four summers at the University of Notre Dame. I got a Doctorate in Ministry from Catholic University in Washington, D.C. I then taught in seminaries in Chicago, St. Louis and eventually, in 1986, Denver. I left the order and priesthood in 1992 and started looking for a job in non-profits. Thatap where I’ve worked for 20 years, either with violent or violated kids, raising money for health care for the poor, shelter for homeless women, or people struggling for dignity in Haiti.
