A look inside Kroenke's empire

KERSEY, CO, MAY 16, 2007 - Platte Valley High School football players take ImPACT test to measure cognitive ability. A handful of Colorado high schools will begin using baseline cognitive tests next school year to help determine whether injured athletes have suffered traumatic brain injuries. The tests, which generally cost $600 per school and are done almost entirely with a computer, can help trainers and doctors determine when players are ready to resume play. In essence, the program, called ImPACT, measures athletes' cognitive abilities before the season, then minutes, days and weeks after a traumatic hit. Already, some state high schools, such as Highlands Ranch and Widefield, are using the tests as are at least 25 NFL teams. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell wants all NFL franchises to use the program this year. The cognitive baselines are needed especially at the school level, researchers say, because children's brains are more susceptible to severe trauma and do not recover as quickly as adults' brains.
