That’s the big idea at Adams County’s Anythink Libraries. They’ve used their seven locations not only to lend books and keep kids and parents busy, but to defuse the anxiety of getting into nature and outdoor activities.

Its programs range from free with fishing poles, tents and backpacks, to workshops and events that let cardholders interact with goats, bees and park rangers. And Anythink’s new, $43.4 million project pushes the concept into even more inviting territory.

is a 33,000-square-foot building that sits on a grassy, windswept 15 acres in Thornton — just next to the 140-acre Aylor Open Lands, and across the street from a group of houses at the intersection of East 136th Avenue and Newport Street.

The handsome structure, all natural wood and curved, floor-to-ceiling windows, is one of those “look at me!” buildings that mixes practicality with larger-than-life design, Anythink leaders said. A lofty sculpture dominates the main entrance, which not only holds up the roof with 18 tons of steel pipes but twists into a surreal, tree-like shape that snakes into the roof.

Thornton leaders approached Anythink in 2019 about the Aylor Open Lands — and specifically their drive to replant its 140 acres with “all-native vegetation, and really bringing the site itself back to like pre-colonial status,” said Mark Fink, executive director of Anythink Libraries.

“That began this whole conversation about Anythink’s larger goals in the grand scheme of things,” he said. “What does our community want and need?”

For one, a way to grow Anythink’s current programming and further connect underserved communities to the outdoors. That includes the more than 40% of Adams County’s population that identifies as Latino — a group that until recently was less likely than others to engage in fitness and hiking, according to the .

“Adams County is close to the mountains, but a lot of people still don’t have access,” Fink said. “There are a lot of barriers for people to actually have this traditional Colorado experience in nature, or go to the mountains, so we’re bringing it to their backyard.”

Anythink’s eighth overall location will feature 35,000 curated nature and ecology books, weekly programming, and shiny new gear to keep visitors coming back. Threaded throughout is an even cooler environment to send them back into, whether snowshoeing the gently hilly grounds or admiring the Front Range from a boulder while noting plant and insect species.

“Our architects and the design team were really inspired by the wind and short-grass prairie landscape as a whole,” said Maria Mayo-Peaseley, branch manager at Anythink. “The name of the design for this building is windswept, which is really meant to mirror that.”

And, leaders said, honor the land with environmentally friendly design. Anythink is hoping it will become Thornton’s most energy-efficient building, with the library’s geothermal field providing heat and cooling, a fully electric mechanical system, and LED lighting all around, .

The indoor-outdoor theme springs from a mix of elements. There are “nature labs” with hands-on learning, gardens and comfy seats, and a one-mile loop trail that funnels visitors to and from the building. Inside, there are kiddie, teen and adult rooms, meeting and relaxation areas, a café with indoor and outdoor seating, a sunroom, and even a low-sensory dark room for those who benefit from that. A central, open-air Kinship Garden will gather visitors to read, chat and hear from speakers on boulder-laden grounds.

The amenities come from bilingual surveys, consultations with Indigenous leaders (who helped inspire the sunroom), and observations of how children interact with libraries and parks, Mayo-Peaseley said, among others.

“There’s the collection, then there’s that physical aspect of feeling the wind on your face and the soil on your hands,” she said. “And risky play — like clambering around on boulders.”

It’s a cross between a library, a National Parks visitor center, and an REI, Fink said.

It’s not unheard of for libraries, which have lately experimented with hip, popular programs that draw new and younger readers while giving longtime card-holders a reason to visit in-person. At the Denver Public Library system and others in the metro area that includes movie nights, poetry readings, fitness workshops, live music, after-hours parties and bilingual events.

Anythink Nature Library has planted its flag in nature, but it still needs support for programming. The building and site is already fully funded, Fink said, with design by Davis Partnership and THK Associates, and . But during National Library Week, April 19-25, the nonprofit Anythink Foundation is inviting donations to fund the upcoming wave of programs, and to add even more public art to the site (see for details).

“We want to give people a framework for connecting to nature,” Fink said. “So if you’re really confident about nature, you can borrow our snowshoes and go snowshoeing around the 140 acres in the winter. But if you’re more comfortable playing in mud that we have outside and having that first-time experience with your kid, this is the kind of place where you can do that.”

A day at Coors Field for fans often includes a hot dog, peanuts and an ice-cold beer. However, itap even more fun when there’s also a giveaway or themed event. This season, the Rockies are giving away free jerseys, shirts, bobbleheads, hats and more at select home games, as well as buy-one-get-one hot dogs. The freebies are usually limited to the first 15,000 fans through the gates. This season also includes many themed game days with giveaways, including Star Wars, Harry Potter, Grateful Dead, Hello Kitty and more. Rocky Mountain Record Show

Vinyl is back and in a big way. And, for collectors, it’s a dream come true at the Rocky Mountain Record Show on April 11-12 at The Denver Sports Castle (1000 Broadway). The show brings together top vinyl sellers offering more than 150,000 records in a festive atmosphere that celebrates collecting culture. While the show focuses on vinyl, there will be other recorded media for sale, as well as music memorabilia and ephemera. To round out the experience, vinyl-only DJs (of course!) will provide the tunes while shoppers flip through all of the bins and racks. Hours are Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. General admission is $13 on Saturday. (For die-hard collectors, early entry starts at 10 a.m. for a cost of $31.) On Sunday, admission drops to $7.

Look up!

The Arvada Kite Festival is set to fill the skies again on April 12 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Stenger Soccer Complex (11200 W. 58th Ave.) The high-flying event will thrill all ages with the artistry of kite flying and friendly competition. Admission is free. Bring your own kite or buy one on-site. Plus, there will be plenty of fun to enjoy on the ground, including musical entertainment, 100+ local vendors, kids’ activities, kite demos, food trucks and more. The Denver Museum of Nature and Science’s Curiosity Cruiser will also be on site. Gates open at 10:45 a.m. Because of all the commotion, dogs are not allowed. Those who bicycle in can use
the complimentary bike valet.

Colorado Button Show

Button up and zip over to the Colorado State Button Society’s Annual Button Show. On April 11 and 12, find a ballroom filled with buttons at the Embassy Suites by Hilton (4444 Havana St.) in Denver. Crafters and collectors alike can explore thousands of vintage and contemporary buttons from dealers across the U.S. The show will include buttons for sale, competitions and button art. This year’s theme is “Out of This World,” featuring buttons with stars, planets and even aliens on them. Hours are Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is free. Use code E1FF1A34 for free parking in the hotel’s garage.

Rocky Mountain Train Show

All aboard! The Rocky Mountain Train Show steams into Denver April 11-12 at the National Western Complex (4655 N. Humboldt St.). This is a huge model train show, with nearly three acres of models, toy trains, 600 vendors and more than 20 massive operating train layouts, including large interactive LEGO displays. The show is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is $16. Kids 12 and younger and Scouts in uniform are admitted for free. Tickets are available online. However, get discounted tickets for $13 at Colpar’s HobbyTown and Rocky Mountain Train Supply. Tickets also include free parking.

Ben & Jerry’s Free Cone Day

Ben & Jerry’s sets aside one day every year to scoop its popular ice cream at no cost. This year, its Free Cone Day is April 14. The cool giveaway is a chance to try a new flavor…or stick with one of your all-time favorites. There is one participating shop in Denver at 2339 E. Evans Ave. There are also two others — Boulder (1203 Pearl St.) and Fort Collins (1 Old Town Sq.). Hours may vary by location, but the giveaway usually runs from noon to 8 p.m. Get there early in the day or expect to wait in line.

Record Store Day

The annual Record Store Day is April 18 with local record shops offering discounts, giveaways and entertainment by local bands or DJs. However, the day is really all about introducing hundreds of new releases on vinyl by big-name stars, as well as new artists — all celebrating the popularity of vinyl and the importance of brick-and-mortar record stores. Because they’re independently-owned, each store sets its own hours, events and/or giveaways for the day. More than 30 stores are participating across Colorado. However, in the Denver metro area, participating stores include Angelo’s CDs & Records, Black & Read, Chain Reaction Records,
Electric Cherry Shop, Twist & Shout, Wax Trax Records and more.

Toy & Doll Supershow

Fans of vintage and collectible toys will want to play around at the Toy & Doll Supershow on April 19 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the National Western Hall of Education (4655 Humboldt St.) in Denver. With more than 250 tables of toys, dolls and more, there will be lots for every collector and enthusiast in attendance to explore or add to their collection. For 2026, the show’s special guests will be Master Toy Designer Tim Clarke and Charlie Fox, creator of Chubwagon Monsters. Admission is $10; children 10 and under get in free. Those who want first crack at the show floor can get in early at 10 a.m. for $15. Best of all, not only is parking free, but tickets also get you admission into the Vintage Voltage Expo being held at the same time. Tickets are available online and at the door.

Taco Bell Colorado Rockies Special

Itap “crunch time” again for baseball fans and taco lovers alike. Taco Bell is stepping up to the home plate for the 2026 baseball season with its Colorado Rockies special. The day following a game in which the Rockies score seven or more runs (win or lose), fans score four regular crunchy tacos for $3 – from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. The offer is valid at participating locations in the Denver metro area – in-restaurant and at the drive-thru.

Jet’s Pizza Colorado Rockies Deal

If the Rockies steal a base during any 2026 game (home or away), fans can jet over to Jet’s Pizza this season for a complimentary slice. With 15 locations in Colorado, Jetap is known for its Detroit-style pizzas. To qualify for the giveaway, customers must wear their Rockies gear at the pizza shop.

Shred-A-Thon

Any thorough spring cleaning should include shredding old documents safely in order to prevent identity theft or credit fraud. The Eastern Star Masonic Retirement Community (2445 S. Quebec St.) in Denver is the site for a Shred-A-Thon on April 25 from 10
a.m. to noon. Bring old checks, bills, bank statements, credit card offers, medical records, tax forms, pay stubs and everything else with personal or financial information. It is not a recycling site, so don’t bring any newspapers, phone books, magazines, plastics, cardboard or catalogs. The service is free. However, any donations, big or small, will be accepted for the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls Scholarship Fund.

Tulip Fairy and Elf Festival

More than 15,000 tulips will be blooming in time for Boulder’s annual Tulip Fairy and Elf Festival on April 26 from 1 to 5 p.m. on the Pearl Street Mall. The event features the lovely Tulip Fairy fluttering among all of the little ones dressed as fairies and elves prancing around. Activities include face painting, arts and crafts projects, entertainment, foam sword dueling, fairy wand making and more. Admission is free. Plus, don’t miss the photo-worthy parades with the Tulip Fairy, leaving from the performance stage at 1:45, 2:45 and 3:45 p.m. The festival is even more fanciful for frugal parents because parking is free on Sundays at all Boulder municipal garages and street meters. If the weather is bad, the rain date is May 3.

King Soopers’ Weekly Digital Deals

For bargain hunters, the days are long gone of walking out of the grocery store with significant savings. Many coupon clippers would often pay pennies for toothpaste, deodorant, body wash, shampoo and more. Nowadays, it can be a challenge to save money on groceries because of the restrictive coupon policies, purchase limits/exceptions, influx of digital coupons and near complete disappearance of paper coupons. But King Soopers recently made a coupon policy change that’s in favor of the consumer. Customers can now get unlimited savings on the grocery store’s popular Weekly Digital Deals. There is still a limit of five sale items per transaction, but the number of transactions is now unlimited. This means shoppers can buy as many of a particular sale item — just in increments of five (or fewer) per transaction. Customers still need to download the digital coupon to their shopper’s loyalty account. The policy change only applies to the Weekly Digital Deals.

Many Denver-area museums and attractions offer free admission on certain days every month, with some even hosting special activities. The free days are funded, in part, by taxes collected through the Science and Cultural Facilities District and/or donations from sponsors. Participating facilities include the Denver Art Museum, Denver Botanic Gardens and the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, among many others. (While general admission is free, some special exhibitions or other add-on activities may incur a fee.) For a full review of participants and dates, visit .

Denver Digs Trees

Though it seems a wee bit early to be thinking about spring, now’s the time to apply for more than 1,200 free and low-cost medium to large shade trees that will be distributed in the spring during The Park People’s Denver Digs Trees program. All Denver residents, businesses, nonprofits and schools are eligible. Trees cost $50 each (a $200 value), and are only $15 if you live in one of the “low-tree-canopy” neighborhoods. Those with a financial hardship may apply to get a free tree. Applications are due no later than Feb. 15. Learn more and apply online at

Recycle your Christmas tree

Nationally, approximately 93 percent of the real Christmas trees are recycled through community programs. Colorado is no exception with most cities and/or counties offering free Christmas tree recycle. Some programs have already started and run into January, with drop-off sites open various length of time, from the first week in January to as long as Jan. 31. A few municipalities offer curb-side pick-up, others ask you to take your tree to a drop-off site. Some even turn the trees into mulch, which is then distributed free to residents. There is no comprehensive holiday tree recycling site, so check your city or county recycling website for details.

DCPAccess Tickets

Among the Denver Center for Performing Arts’ discount programs, the most popular is its DCPAccess, which provides affordable access to many of its productions — even the occasional touring Broadway show — at up to 75 percent off. The discounted price includes the base ticket cost, as well as all fees and city seat tax. A first set of on-sale dates for 2026 have been announced: Jan. 6, Feb. 17 and April 7, and discounted tickets go on sale at noon each day. The shows and performance dates available changes each time, and there is a limit of four tickets per show. (Tickets often sell out within the same day, so be sure to set a reminder.) New sales and additional shows are added on a rolling basis throughout the year. The DCPA also offers special limited-time discounts on additional shows, so be sure to sign up for e-mail updates.

Things to do in Denver: A trashy Christmas show, a cheeky RiNo market and more /2025/12/11/things-to-do-denver-christmas-market/ Thu, 11 Dec 2025 13:00:52 +0000 /?p=7357846 Holiday magic in song

Friday and Sunday. Denver Gay Men’s Chorus always has some holiday magic up its sleeve, this year taking the form of “My Favorite Queens.” Kicking off DGMC’s 44th season, it’s “a playful nod to ‘My Favorite Things,’ and promises to be joyful, campy, heartfelt, with just the right amount of reflection, tradition, and drag-queen sparkle,” organizers wrote.

The program includes movie classics and stage favorites, they added, “as well as heartwarming carols … .” If you missed the first couple of performances last weekend, you can still catch it at Unity of Boulder Spiritual Center at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 12, and St. Andrew United Methodist Church in Highlands Ranch at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 14. General admission tickets are $25.60-$32. Visit for more.

A John Waters Christmas

Sunday. Ever-gleeful Pope of Trash and legendary director John Waters (“Hairspray,” “Sweet and Lowdown”) is back in Colorado with his naughty holiday show, “A John Waters Christmas,” the poster for which is a hint of the tone (a deranged-looking Waters feasting on a holiday icon, and we’ll leave it at that).

Waters’ hilarious stage presence and storytelling skills would make him entertaining in any context, but as someone obsessed with the kitsch and absurdity of the holidays, a Christmas show fits him like a tailored, blinking suit. It’s technically an all-ages performance, but if you bring a kid you’re going to have some thorny questions to address on the ride home.

Waters’ show comes to the Boulder Theater at 8 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 14, with tickets running $66.20-$78.05. Located at 2032 14th St. in Boulder.
