Who: Larry White of Evergreen (center) with Norwegian guides Einer Hauge and Magnus Loseth
Where: Rondvassbu, Rondane National Park
Out and about: I spent 10 days in March ski-touring along the 100-mile route from Rondane National Park to Lillehammer. During the first half the trip, I was with a group of members and guides from the Norwegian Mountain Touring Association. Then I proceeded on my own to Lillehammer in time to watch the Birkebeiner Worldloppet – “mother of all Nordic ski races.’
Travel tip: Norway is truly the mecca for cross-country skiers, with hundreds of miles of marked interconnected trails, many of which are groomed regularly. The numerous lodges and backcountry huts along the trails offer comfortable accommodations and great food in an incredible winter landscape. You can go with a guided tour organized by the association or have its consultants arrange your own private tour. Everyone in Norway spoke English. Most skiers travel with very light mountain touring skis to kick-and-glide long distances over rolling terrain. Check out the Norwegian Mountain Touring Association’s website at .
