Now that there’s a new pope, can we concentrate on important matters, like who’s No.1 in Saturday’s National Football League draft?
Local sports-talk hosts are beside themselves. Even the Nuggets are taking a back seat. And the Rockies? Who?
Post sports columnist Jim Armstrong, my new talk-show idol, was discussing the draft with football writers around the country on KLZ 560-AM (“The Zone’) the other morning. Everybody had a guess. Armstrong’s conclusion: “If you don’t have any information, start a rumor.’
It’s wall-to-wall TV coverage on ESPN, starting at 10 a.m. Saturday and again at 5:30 p.m. No staring at Mel Kiper’s hair.
Adam Schefter, who toils for the NFL Network, is especially pumped. He’ll be backstage at the draft in New York City, grabbing the first one-on-one interviews with the top six picks right after they’re chosen. “It’s pretty amazing. This will be my 16th year covering the draft but I’ve never been to New York. I’ve always been at Dove Valley,’ home of the Broncos. “I’m curious to see how this is going to go.’
He was impressed the Broncos gave up their first pick this year. “I love that move because, basically, they get a third-round choice this year and Washington’s No.1 next year. It could be a top-12 pick.’
Hopeless draft-heads can get into the NFL Network (www.nfl.com/nflnetwork) and watch hours and hours of coverage, including a mock draft beginning at 6 tonight.
Other places to keep up:
KLZ 560-AM: There’s a live remote from Dove Valley at 9 a.m. and Tim Neverett goes remote with fans at Dirk’s Sports Saloon in Centennial at noon.
KOA 850-AM: Dave Logan anchors and guest experts pitch in for live coverage from 1 to 4 p.m., during which the Broncos should make their first pick.
KKFN 950-AM (“The Fan’): They will stay with it all day. Mark Moser and Lou From Littleton give it their all from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Sandy Clough picks it up from 1 to 3 p.m.
This is important. The pope dictates Sunday mornings. Football rules the rest of the day.
