Getting your player ready...

Chad Brown’s agent said he has been in contact with the Broncos about the recently released linebacker who played at the University of Colorado and lives in Lone Tree.

“They are one of the teams that we’re talking to,” agent Peter Schaffer said. “There have been numerous teams showing interest in Chad.”

Thursday, the day Brown was released by Seattle, Schaffer said Denver was interested. Brown, 34, will visit New England on Monday, then possibly Cincinnati.

Green Bay and Cleveland also are interested in the former all-pro player.

The Broncos could use a veteran linebacker pass-rusher, and Brown is known as a strong locker room presence. Denver has just less than $3 million remaining in salary cap room.

Schaffer said Brown will watch to see where his younger brother Van, of Northwestern Oklahoma State, is drafted today because he would be interested in playing with the defensive end.

Brown, released by Seattle because of financial reasons, has had recent injury issues. He missed 19 games in the past three seasons, but has been productive when healthy.

No. 25 goes to Campbell

Well, now we know Washington’s motivation for giving up so much last week. The Broncos sent the No. 25 pick to the Redskins on Tuesday for the No. 76 pick and the Redskins’ first- and fourth-round picks next season.

There had been speculation the Redskins would take Auburn quarterback Jason Campbell with the traded pick, and Saturday, they did.

Campbell had been targeted before the trade, which has been widely considered around the league a steal for the Broncos.

Wheeling and dealing?

There is a chance Denver will be active in the trade market today. The Broncos enter the day with two picks, the 200th overall pick in the sixth round, and the 239th overall pick in the seventh.

However, Denver has ammunition to get into the fourth and fifth rounds. The Broncos have nine picks in 2006, because of the Washington trade. Plus, the Broncos will likely get at least one compensatory pick next year for the free-agents losses of defensive end (Jacksonville) and safety (Detroit).

Thus, the Broncos can trade some future picks if they see players they target to be available today.

Also, Denver could be interested in Colorado tailback Bobby Purify, either in the late rounds or as a priority undrafted free agent.

Quarterback could also be addressed in the latter rounds or in free agency. At this point, Denver plans on having and – both taken in the seventh round last year – compete with incumbent backup Danny Kanell to back up .

Denver could also look at a punter today, a major need. Jason Baker, who finished the season as the team’s punter, will return but coach Mike Shanahan said last month that the team will bring in competition.

If Denver doesn’t trade a punter, one possibility may be Todd Sauerbrun. He is expected to be cut by Carolina after June 1.
