Led by Kristen Campos’ third-place finish Saturday, Colorado State finished third at the Mountain West Conference women’s golf championships in Sunriver, Oregon.
Campos carded a 2-over-par 73 in the final round and finished 7-over, six strokes behind the winner, Elena Kurokawa of UNLV.
The Rams’ Trisha Quick (78) finished at 14-over.
The Rebels won the team title, firing a 46-over 898, two strokes ahead of New Mexico.
Colorado State entered the final round six strokes behind UNLV, but the Rams endured their worst round of the tournament, a 23-over 307, and finished nine strokes off the pace.
Wyoming (993) came in last in the six-team field.
The University of Colorado women’s golf team fell one spot to eighth – 28 strokes off the pace – after two rounds of the Big 12 Championships in Austin, Texas.
Buffs’ senior Allison Rella led after the first round but shot a 10-over 82 and fell to eighth at 8-over.
Hannah Hoch was the only Buff to shoot below 80 in the second round. She carded a 78 and was 12-over. CU shot a 35-over 323 for the round.
Oklahoma State (26-over 602) was the leader for the second consecutive day, one stroke ahead of Texas heading into today’s final round.
The CSU men’s golf team finished in third place at the Cougar Classic in Provo, Utah, nine strokes behind first-place Fresno State.
John Hayes shot 3-under 69 and finished in a tie for fifth for the Rams at 11-under.
The University of Denver was eighth, 36 strokes behind Fresno State. The Pioneers’ James Love (71) finished 6-under.
Aztecs pound Falcons
San Diego State broke open a 5-4 game with six runs in the third inning and eight in the sixth en route to a 20-9 rout of the visiting Air Force baseball team.
Falcons starter Paul Pratt (2-9) was roughed up 11 runs and seven hits in 2 1/3 innings.
Matt Ghigna drove in four runs for Air Force (5-13, 0-16 Mountain West).
A bases-loaded walk forced in the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning as Northern Colorado beat Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 10-9 in Greeley.
Phil Delich and Matt Sutton hit home runs for the Bears (15-25).
Metro State swept a doubleheader from Colorado Mines in Golden, winning 9-2 and 11-3.
The Roadrunners’ Jason Hanna (3-4) went the distance in the first game, yielding four hits and one earned run.
In the second game, Clint Cleland had a homer and three RBIs for Metro State (12-33, 4-15 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference).
The Orediggers (23-23, 8-10) had only eight hits combined in the two games.
Regis and Fort Hays State split a doubleheader in Hays, Kan.
The Rangers’ Craig Deaver (4-3) pitched a 3-hit shutout with eight strikeouts in the first game, an 8-0 victory for Regis (22-22, 5-13 RMAC).
Sean Chase and Peter Whatley homered for the Rangers.
The Tigers (22-19, 8-11) won the second game 8-1 behind pitcher Steven Walters, who yielded six hits and one earned run in seven innings.
Wyoming AD to stay
Wyoming athletic director Gary Barta said he would stay at Wyoming, taking himself out of the running for the opening at Arizona State.
