Q: What are some trail etiquette tips for mountain biking on high-traffic singletrack?
A: First, hikers and joggers are kings. They were there first. Mountain bikers must make sure hikers know they are there before passing. Dismount when you pass a horse; nobody wants a spooked horse on a singletrack. Pass other riders only after announcing – “On your left!” – the pending pass. And uphill riders, even though they are poking along, have the right of way, although sometimes the really friendly hill-climbers will yield to the zooming downhillers. More tips: Stay on established trails and pack out your trash.
