Three Thieves
2003 Extremadura Tempranillo, about $14/liter
(Imported by Liberators, Sausalito, Calif.)
Make room in the pantry: here’s your summer barbecue wine. Not only is it light, juicy, spicy, frisky, with just enough tannin to take down grilled sausages – all the things you want from a summer red – but it’s packaged in a generous 1-liter jug with a screw-cap for easy access (and assured freshness).
It’s the latest release from the Three Thieves (actually Joel Gott of Napa’s Gott Wines, Charles Bieler of France’s Ch teau Routas, and Mendocino-based grape grower Roger Scommenga), whose goal is to find great grapes for near nothing and make them into affordable, fun and delish wines.
