Lengyel wins Toner award

Jack Lengyel, the University of Colorado interim athletic director since Dec. 1, was named Tuesday as the winner of the 2005 John L. Toner Award, presented each year by the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame.

The honor recognizes “superior administrative abilities” and “dedication to college athletics, particularly football.”

Lengyel, who served as AD for 13 years at Navy and also at Missouri and Fresno State, retired in 2001. During his retirement he worked as an interim AD at Eastern Kentucky and Temple before going to Boulder.

Lengyel will be honored Dec. 6 in New York.

CSU announces schedule

Colorado State’s volleyball team will host two tournaments this season. The schedule includes matches against five teams that made the 2004 NCAA Tournament. CSU will host the University Park Classic (Sept. 9-10) and the Coors Classic (Sept. 16-17) as well as nine other matches at home.

UNC rallies to beat BYU

Zach Brockman hit a solo home run and Grady Gorman and Craig Troxell each drove in two runs in a six-run fifth inning to lead Northern Colorado to a 12-7 win over Brigham Young (28-12-1) in Greeley.

The Bears (16-26) trailed 7-4 entering the fifth and scored six runs to give the win to reliever Roy Allen (2-1).

Philippe qualifies for regional

Adams State golfer Jeff Philippe has been invited to play in the NCAA Division II Northwest/West Super Regional on May 2-4 at Dakota Dunes (S.D.) Country Club.

Zenger named Illinois State AD

Sheahon Zenger, a former assistant football coach at Wyoming (1997-99), was named athletic director at Illinois State.

Zenger, 39, is leaving his position as the associate athletic director at Kansas State, his alma mater.
