Furnas County, Neb. – As a lifelong farmer, it’s only natural for Kent Chambers to think of it as planting a seed.

Whether his newly germinated organization, Farmers Against Illegal Drugs, takes root and spreads remains to be seen.

FAID, which also aims at the consumption of alcohol while hunting, is the outcrop of what Chambers and others who look favorably upon wildlife and hunting view as an assault on their hospitality and traditional outdoor values.

“We have a lot of methamphetamine production out here. It’s hard to control it,” Chambers said. “Most farmers know you have to stick together.”

While the organization has no force of law, it does serve as a reverse welcome mat to substance abusers, a proclamation of vigilance Chambers hopes will reverse what has been a growing trend in farm country.
