Who: Cecilia Freeman of Denver
Where: The balcony of the Paris Hilton
Out and about: We spent our honeymoon in Paris over New Year’s week. We stayed at the Paris Hilton because of the phenomenal views of the Eiffel Tower. There are several lesser-known attractions that you shouldn’t miss, so break out of the mold. We went to the Dome at Les Invalides Church to see Napoleon’s Tomb. We visited the Rodin Museum to see “The Thinker” statue. We found footbridges that cross the Seine that had amazing views. And if you want the most time in the Louvre, go on Monday or Wednesday, when it’s open until 9:45 p.m.
Travel tip: Be prepared for the bad exchange rate. A standard meal at a brasserie can run 30 euros (about $39) for two people. Buy a carnet of 10 metro tickets versus a several-days pass. More than likely you’ll spend your days in different areas of the city versus going back and forth all the time. English isn’t spoken that often by the locals. Cafes and brasseries are usually crowded and smoky. There are very few Internet cafes in the city. Some hotels offer Internet access for a fee in their business center. The most fun part of our trip was strolling through the streets in and around the Notre Dame. There’s a great section of Greek restaurants and knickknack shops.
