Pope to give his first Sunday noon blessing

Pope Benedict XVI plans to give his first Sunday noontime blessing today from the papal apartment overlooking St. Peter’s Square, the Vatican said, greeting the faithful from the same third-floor window where Pope John Paul II welcomed pilgrims for nearly 27 years.

Benedict was moving into the apartment Saturday, formally taking possession of the official papal residence that was sealed after John Paul died April 2.

Resort town pulls ban on skimpy swimsuits

Come on in, Speedo wearers, the water’s fine: Your skimpy little swimsuits are legal now.

For more than 30 years, the quaint little Victorian-themed resort town of Cape May at the southern tip of New Jersey said no to “skintight, form-fitting or bikini-type” bathing attire on males older than 12.

“It’s a beach town, for God’s sake,” Police Chief Diane Sorantino said.

“A lot of people do come in and say, ‘Do you carry Speedos?’ said Becky Fitzgerald, sales clerk at Della’s General Store. “It’s the 40- to 50-year- old group who ask. And it’s funny, their bodies aren’t the shape for Speedos.”

The swimsuit ban was enacted in the 1960s in response to complaints about gay men who wore the suits on the beach, according to former Mayor Robert Elwell.

But the ban was rarely if ever enforced, according to the city, which voted to amend its beach regulations last week.

Quints’ surrogate mom leaves hospital

The surrogate mother who delivered quintuplets last week left an Arizona hospital Saturday, a spokeswoman said.

Teresa Anderson, 25, delivered five boys by cesarean section Tuesday for a childless couple she met on the Internet.

One of the babies was born with a defective heart; the others were said to be doing fine.

Anderson had been implanted with five embryos with the hope that one would take hold. She initially planned to charge Luisa Gonzalez, 32, and her husband Enrique Moreno, 34, a $15,000 fee.

After discovering all five embryos were developing, Anderson declined to accept any payment from the couple because of the expenses they will face.
