New York – Denver heavyweight DaVarryl Williamson knocked out Derrick Jefferson in the second round of their fight on the undercard of the John Ruiz-James Toney championship bout at Madison Square Garden.

Williamson knocked down Jefferson with a powerful right-left combination late in the first round.

Williamson (24-3, 18 knockouts) didn’t let up in the second round, flooring Jefferson early. When Jefferson got up, he and Williamson immediately clinched and fell to the canvas together.

Clearly annoyed, Williamson went to the attack with a flurry of uppercuts and huge rights. The fight was stopped at 2:41 of the second round, but easily could have been concluded 20 seconds earlier, saving the defenseless Jefferson more punishment.

“I served notice tonight to the heavyweight division,” Williamson said. “I know I am ready to do great things.”
